Causes of Female Low Libido - Diminished Sex Desire In Women

A healthy sexual life is instrumental to healthy love life between couples. Man and woman get united sexually not only to procreate but also because it is an affair of utmost enjoyment, a natural urge created by God and a means to strengthen the love between couples. The unhealthy lifestyle in the modern era and seething stress generate sexual dysfunctions that spoil a couple's love life and may even spoil their relationship altogether. Low libido is a major dysfunction that wrecks one's married life. Low libido stands for diminished sex drive or lack of lovemaking desire.

Low libido is also differently termed as hypoactive lovemaking desire which again may be defined as persistent or recurrent disinterest in lovemaking activities. Women are more susceptible to low libido problem than men. It makes them sexually handicapped and the peace of their love life may go for a toss. Delayed orgasm or absence of orgasm usually follows low libido problem. Actually in case of women, libido keeps fluctuating over the years. There are peaks and troughs and often they coincide. But if a woman is plagued by persistent loss of interest in lovemaking and if that causes personal distress to her, she may have to seek medical advice.

The good news is that there are ways to boost female libido these days. The market offers numerous side-effect free herbal products that promise rewarding results. Kamini capsules, Fantasy capsules, Provestra, Her-solution gel and pills, Shatavari pills, for example, are purely herbal and quite effective. Also certain lifestyle changes, sex techniques, counseling and behavioral therapy can be helpful in putting a woman in mood quite often.

A woman's libido is influenced much by a complex interaction of many components such as intimacy with partner, her emotional well being, physical well being, experiences, beliefs, lifestyle etc. Problem in any of these areas would have a negative impact on a woman's libido. Here we are going to discuss some of the causes of low libido in women:

Physical causes

1. Problems like painful sex (dyspareunia) and orgasmic disorder (anorgasmia) may cause low libido in women.

2. Medical ailments like arthritis, anemia, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, neurological disease and cancer can diminish libido in woman. Infertility also reduces lovemaking desire.

3. Medications like antidepressants, tranquilizers, mood-stabilizer, antihistamines, and chemotherapy drugs decrease female libido.

4. Alcohol and drugs if taken in large quantities can lower libido in women.

5. Fatigue or exhaustion after attending to children, old parents, and household chores may generate disinterest in lovemaking.

6. Surgery in the genital tract or breasts can adversely affect woman's lovemaking desire.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal imbalance during menopause, pregnancy and breast-feeding periods reduces a woman's sexual appetite. Drop in estrogen and testosterone levels during these phases dampens a woman's desire for lovemaking.

Psychological causes

1. Mental disorders like depression and anxiety cause a drop in female libido.

2. Sense of guilt or shame arising from past history of sexual abuse lowers female libido.

3. Stressors consume a female's sexual appetite.

4. Low self-esteem lessens woman's libido.

5. Poor body image makes a woman shaky and negatively affects her libido.

Relationship problems: Unresolved conflict with partner, grudge arising out of infidelity, communication gap between partners, inability to explain the sexual needs and preference to partner may diminish a woman's libido.

Causes of Low Libido (Decreased Sexual Desire) in Women

Physical intimacy is important in every relationship. It is a non-verbal way of showing our affection, trust, and love. In our male-dominated society, women feel as if it is their responsibility to give their partner pleasure and that failure to do so means that they don't love their partner as much as they should. It is for this reason that a decrease in libido can cause such deep rifts between partners and married couples. Libido is defined as the urge to copulate. Sometimes a woman may just be too tired, in pain, or simply not in the mood. There are also certain medical conditions that can cause this. Below are some of the most common reasons why women have a decreased urge to make love.

Anorgasmia is a medical term which means failure to achieve orgasm during coitus. While orgasm isn't really the be all and end all of sex, it plays an important part. Without orgasm, a woman might feel as if her partner is letting her down by simply pleasuring himself and not her. Sometimes, this may legitimately be caused by the man's lack of sensitivity to what pleases his partner. In cases where anorgasmia is constant, it qualifies as a genuine medical disorder called female orgasmic dysfunction.

Dyspareunia or pain during sexual intercourse may also be the reason why some women dislike having intercourse. This does not include the first time for women when the hymen is torn. Reasons for this include vaginal dryness, infection (including sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, herpes, and trichomoniasis), disproportionately sized sexual organs (his equipment is too big, or her passage is too small), and vaginismus. Vaginismus is another medical condition wherein the muscles in the outer third of the vagina contract involuntarily during penetration. This is painful for both partners and he may sometimes ‘get stuck’. Thankfully, there are treatments available for this condition.

Hormonal imbalance is usually the main suspect when it comes to decreased libido. Women are more likely to be interested in making love during their fertile periods (usually fourteen days before the start of the next cycle) and since progesterone is the hormone that is mainly responsible for this, a decreased level of this hormone corresponds to a lowered libido. There are certain times during a woman's monthly cycle when the level of progesterone falls. It’s right before or after their period. During this time, women usually lose interest in having sex.
