UTI or urinary tract infection is the infection of the urinary tract caused by pathogenic organisms like bacteria, fungi or parasite. The urinary tract comprises of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra and an infection in any of these parts is referred to as UTI. UTI is however a broad term; there are separate medical terms for infection of each of the structures of urinary tract. The terms may be listed as follows:
1. Pyelonephritis (infection of kidneys)
2. Ureter infection (infection of ureters)
3. Cystisis (infection of bladder)
4. Urethritis (infection of urethra)
Escherichia Coli bacterium is the leading cause of most cases of UTI. The other UTI causing bacteria are Klebsiella Psuedomonas, Enterobacter, Proteus, Staphyloccocus, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia etc. The fungi like Candida, Cryptococcus cause UTI. Some UTI causing parasites are Trichomonas, Schistosoma etc. Women are more susceptible to UTI when compared to men. This is because the urethra in women is smaller than men and also because the urethral exit is located very close to vagina where infection causing pathogenic organisms usually reside. The UTI symptoms are: pain or dysuria during urination, burning sensation during urination, passage of blood in urine, cloudy appearance of urine, frequent urge for urination, pain in pubic bone region in women and pain around rectum in men, weak urine stream, lower abdominal pain, bloating, high fever, chills, tremor and vomiting. The factors triggering UTI may be listed as follows:
1. Habit of urine retention
2. Weakened immune system
3. Pregnancy
4. Menopause
5. Medical conditions like bladder stones, diabetes, enlarged prostate, sexually transmitted diseases, kidney stones, epididymis, fistulas, bacteremia, AIDS, cancer etc.
6. Urethral strictures or other anatomical defects in the urinary tract.
7. Use of catheters
8. Use of diaphragms by women
9. Use of condoms with spermicidal foam
10. Urological surgery.
Home Remedies
1. Mix half teaspoon baking soda in 9 ounces of water and take twice daily. This is a good treatment for UTI.
2. Combine cranberry juice and apple juice to make a glassful and take daily. This dissolves and expels the UTI causing bacteria.
3. Boil root of marshmallow in 150 ml water for sometime. Strain and drink the tea twice daily. This cures UTI.
4. Blend tinctures of Echinacea, buchu, uva, ursi and pipsissewa. Take1 teaspoon of the tincture blends every hourly. This treats severe cases of UTI effectively.

6. Drink glassful diluted apple cider vinegar daily. It supplies the body with necessary enzymes and potassium to combat UTI.
7. Consume Oregon grapefruit in plenty. This will help to get rid of UTI.
8. Consume Vitamin C rich citrus fruits like oranges and lemons in plenty. This makes urine acidic and checks bacterial growth.
9. Drink plenty of fluids and 8-10 glasses of water. This will cleanse urinary tract by flushing out pathogenic organisms.
10. Drinking of blueberry juice inhibits the growth of UTI causing bacteria
11. Stay away from soft drinks, caffeinated beverages, alcohol and smoking
12. Eat fresh vegetables and fiber rich diet to allow thorough cleansing of your system.
13. Do not take anything sour, for that may aggravate UTI symptoms. Avoid hot, spicy food for the same reason.
14. Wear cotton underwear, for cotton keeps the genital area dry and prevents bacteria from thriving.

Home Remedies for UTI Urinary Tract Infection Right From Your Kitchen
Urinary Tract Infection is quite common in women, and more still among pregnant women. The symptoms are quite ordinary and do not vary much from person to person. There is a terrible urge to rush to the bathroom and once in, one passes very little urine accompanied by a burning sensation. One could also experience stomach ache and mild fever followed by a vomiting sensation, backache and chills. Sometimes one could also find blood in the urine or stools leaving her wondering what she could have possibly done to bring this upon herself.
The first golden rule or the best of all home remedies for UTI is to drink plenty of water. The more water one drinks, the more one is likely to flush out infection or toxins from the body through urine. This actually doesn’t cost anything.
Certain home remedies for UTI cause quick and immense relief and are not hard on the pocket either. Blueberries and cranberries have bacteria blocking properties. Blueberry or unsweetened cranberry juice can be consumed daily to get relief from the burning sensation, thus hastening recovery. Cranberry tablets too are equally effective.
Eating fresh pineapple also can cure Urinary Tract Infection, as pineapple contains bromelain, an antibiotic capable of reducing infection and inflammation.
Placing a hot water bottle or a heating pad on the abdomen could be of immense help too, if one is suffering from pain.
Yogurt and buttermilk are also excellent home remedies for UTI. Moreover, consuming citrus fruits containing vitamin C, like oranges and lemons, keeps the bladder in good condition and ensures an infection-free urinary tract.
Women should try to wear loose cotton panties, and similarly men should wear loose cotton boxers to avoid irritation. Another important thing to remember is never to control the urge to go to a washroom to urinate, as this could lead to increase in infection and pain. Any common painkiller could be helpful in easing the pain when it becomes unbearable.
Uva ursi is an herb that is known to contain antibiotic properties and cure vaginal diseases, but it should not be used for pregnant women and children.
It is a good habit to always wipe from front to back after urinating, as this prevents the infection from reentering the body.
Consuming alcohol during UTI could be hazardous as it aggravates the itching and pain. Hence, one must avoid it completely. Caffeine loaded products like tea or coffee too could cause irritation, and should therefore be avoided. However, herbal tea can be consumed.
Smoking could cause coughing and is likely to cause leaks. But the most important reason to quit smoking is that it is known to cause bladder cancer.
During UTI, light food should be taken instead of routine food. Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables is a good idea, and spicy food should be totally avoided.
In cases of extreme pain, fever or if the inflammation persists too long, immediate medical help is advisable as otherwise it could lead to damage in the kidneys or the urinary tract.

Use Effective Natural Home Remedies for Urinary Tract Infection
The urinary tract consists of the kidney, ureters, bladder and the urethra. If any of these get infected, it is known as the urinary tract infection or UTI. Children and adults can get this infection, but women are more prone to get it.
In the urinary tract, the bacteria usually infect the bladder. This is the most common condition. The urethra which carries the urine from the bladder to outside of the body gets infected and carries the infection to the bladder. If the bacteria reach the kidney, it is a serious condition.
The causes for this can be genetic. The reason that women are more likely to suffer from urinary tract infection is due to the closeness of the urethra to the anus in women. The bacteria from the anus spread to the urethra and are carried to the bladder. The most common bacteria are the gastrointestinal bacteria called E. coli which resides in the colon. Also the length of the urethra is short, thereby moving the germs to the bladder quickly and easily. Catheters and diaphragm also are sources of infection. Pregnant women, people with kidney stones, people suffering from diabetes and people with low immunity are more prone to UTI. Dehydration is also a cause for urinary tract infection.
The symptoms experienced are pain, constant urge to urinate, burning sensation while urinating, cloudy urine, blood in urine, foul smelling urine and pelvic pain. If the bacteria reach the upper urinary tract, symptoms like nausea, vomiting, chills and fever maybe present. In children, loss of appetite and irritability is noticed.
Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics after checking the urine sample. Some simple home remedies can help prevent and treat UTI. Some of the home remedies are as follows
1. Water: Water helps to flush out all toxins from the body. It keeps you hydrated.
2. Cranberry Juice: Cranberry juice is very beneficial is treating urinary tract infections. It has properties by which it prevents the bacteria to cling to the cells.
3. Blueberry: Blueberries also have bacteria inhibiting properties. Include blueberries in your diet.
4. Pineapple: Eating pineapple helps in this condition.
5. Echinacea: Echinacea helps fight infection and also increases immunity of the system.
6. Alfalfa Juice: Alfalfa is more beneficial for the kidney. It helps get rid of the toxins and ensures the bacteria does not spread to the kidneys.
7. Baking Soda: Add a pinch of baking soda to a glass of water and drink. This increases the pH balance of the urine.
It is important that one does not hold the urge to urinate. Clean the area well and wipe from front to back not the reverse way as that increases the chances of getting the bacteria to the urethra. Clean yourself completely after lovemaking session. Avoid sprays and douches on body. Take showers instead of tub baths and avoid alcohol, coffee and tea. Stay away from bladder irritating foods like chocolates, spicy food, tomato and nicotine. Avoid sugary and starchy food. Do not wear tight undergarments, instead wear loose comfortable clothing.
